Locally known as tuki or butanding in other parts of the country, the whale sharks of Barangay Tan-awan, Oslob have been drawing tourists since 2011. That same year when whale sharks were reported to have visited this southern town, more than 98,000 tourists also came to Oslob. The influx is no mystery: these creatures are nothing short of awesome.
And there is some sort of majesty to see them up close and swim beside them.
Touching is not allowed but you can always take a selfie with the whale shark.
Meanwhile, the town, fisherfolk and non-government organizations are working to find long-term, sustainable eco-tourism solutions for the welfare of both the community and the whale sharks. Tan-awan, Oslob, Cebu.
